At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a boy named Shepherd. here His existence was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his herd of rams.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind across the single tree on the mountaintop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his charges imbued in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. On one such day because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous scheme.
Narratives of predators hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but discovered no beast.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This trick persisted for a few days more. However, one morning, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
